The "Liebig" Condenser (note the red lessons and questions). In discussing early 19th Century contributions that still provide valuable lessons for chemistry, we have concentrated mostly on elemental analysis (for example, Combustion and Liebig's "Kaliapparat") and the theories that sprang from it.Techniques for separation and purification have always been equally important.
The Liebig condenser or straight condenser is a piece of laboratory equipment, specifically a condenser consisting of a straight glass tube surrounded by a water jacket. In typical laboratory operation, such as distillation, the condenser is clamped to a retort stands in vertical or oblique orientation. The hot vapor of some liquid is introduced at the upper end of the inner tube, and condensesin contact with its colder walls. Water (or some other fluid) is constantl

The Vigreux column, named after the French glass blower Henri Vigreux (1869–1951) who invented it in 1904, consists of a wide glass tube with multiple internal glass "fingers" that point downwards. Each "finger" is created by melting a small section of the wall and pushing the soft glass inwards. The vapor that enters from the lower opening condenses on the fingers and drips down from them. It is usually air-cooled, but may have an outer glass jacket for forced fluid cooling.
While a condenser can be used in a variety of distillation set-ups, we recommend using this with a Kjeldahl distillation bulb to improve distillation efficiency. This Liebig condenser is designed to be connected to other components using rubber stoppers. The upper (inlet) tube has an inside diameter of about 17 mm which fits a No. 2 rubber stopper.
Here is a few photos of the Liebig condenser in action. As you can see, it is a small set-up and I can only distil about 5 litres of wash at a time. In the video you can see the drip-rate or in this case flow-rate of 65% ethanol being distilled to about 82% strength. In the last picture you can see the strength of the distillate.

Cracking of dicyclopentadiene was my simple Liebig
The setup as instructed by my supervisor consisted of a simple water-cooled Liebig condenser. Oil bath temp. at 180 °C, receiving flask held at -78 °C by a dry ice-acetone bath: Everything seemed to work fine, and I got plenty of cyclopentadiene after distilling for about 4 hours.
Mar 07, 2020The simplest distilation set up I saw when researching was the boiling flask to distillation bulb (or just a curved connector thing, but I already have the bulb) to a condenser that just drips into a collection flask, which is what I'm going for. Still not even sure if I'm gonna do it, but it would be nice to be able to recycle my solvents.

Jan 30, 2016Personally I would not recommend a Liebig for use over 3 kW UNLESS you can go for one of the coiled designs or can use high coolant flow rates. The likely length needed for 5.5 kW is going to be more than your 30" specified. You are better off using a multi vapour path condenser a shotgun.

Liebig condenser is used for condensing of vapours that pass trough the centre tube. It is cooled with water that passes in the outer tube (shell around the centre tube) in the opposite direction than the one of hot vapour. Though named after the German chemist Justus von Liebig (1803-1873), he cannot be given credit for having invented it
Water should always enter from the bottom of a condenser (the end closest to the flask) and exit from the top of the condenser. Doing it this way always ensures that your condenser will be full of cooling water. If you set it up the opposite way, and if for some reason the rate of water flow into the condenser decreased and became slower than the rate of water exiting the condenser

(I have never used liquid nitrogen to cool, is it possible to use LN2 in a glass condenser, or is a metallic set up needed for pressure concerns?). DISTILLATION APPARATUS Distillation is a common operation in many laboratories for the purpose of separating and/or purifying components of a liquid mixture. The apparatus used consists of three major parts: distillation flask (or ‘pot’) to heat the mixture and volatilize the components, a condenser to cool the vapors back to liquid state, and a collection vessel.
How To Make A Reflux Still Complete Plans To Build A
Nov 29, 2014To do it over again I would not run the Liebig cooling pipes through the column. My second still uses a 2” 45 elbow to the Liebig condenser. So no pipes across the column. im new to all this but the set up im looking at is larger than what im seeing here. id like to make what i need for the year all at once if possible, in as few batches
Jun 01, 2018So I did a little trial experiment with the lab set up again. I put a small charge of low wines in a boiler, attached the liebig in the dephlegmator position and set up a second product condenser coming off of the top. Observations: I had to run the rig at full boil to overcome the reflux being generated for a start.

Buy a couple of these and you'll be fine Just pump cold water into your liebig condenser and into an empty container. If you want to do it like the old timers just do a similar setup using 50 gallon containers and a gravity feed (50 gallon container higher thent he still) and just manually feed it
